Our Team
Rhys Kennedy
Hi, I’m Rhys - an exercise physiologist, former professional rugby league player, and passionate advocate for inclusive health and wellbeing.
My journey began with a diagnosis of psoriatic arthritis at just eight years old. Living with a chronic condition from such a young age shaped the way I approached life, sport, and health. Despite the challenges, I pursued my dream of playing professional rugby league, eventually making my NRL debut at 24 after relocating to four different cities and playing across a variety of teams, including the Brisbane Broncos and South Sydney Rabbitohs. I also spent two years playing in the UK, where I navigated a range of personal and professional challenges that further deepened my understanding of resilience, adaptability, and the value of strong team culture.
Alongside my playing career, I completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science and a Master’s in Exercise Physiology. Today, I use both my lived experience and academic training to deliver mental health and performance education—with a strong focus on supporting individuals living with disability. I’m particularly passionate about working with NDIS participants, empowering them through personalised, evidence-based exercise programs that improve not only physical development but also engagement, confidence, and social inclusion. Whether it’s helping kids with ASD build motor skills through sport, or guiding individuals to improve their overall wellbeing, my goal is to create environments where everyone feels supported, capable, and included.
David Shillington
I’m David Shillington, former NRL player for the Roosters, Raiders, Titans, Queensland Maroons and the Australian Kangaroos. After finishing my 16-year playing career, I made the transition into mental health advocacy, working with the NRL across mental wellbeing and domestic violence prevention programs. Connecting with grassroots and regional communities, I saw firsthand how many people - especially those living with long-term conditions or facing complex life challenges, were falling through the cracks and needed more support.
That experience drove me to upskill as a Master Principal Instructor of Mental Health First Aid, to train 1000s of people in workplaces, schools and sporting clubs to have safe and helpful conversations around mental health. Now, I collaborate with psychologists and clinicians, and other former athletes, to co-design impactful programs. By using the relatable voice of current and former athletes, we were able to connect with participants on a human level: sharing stories, not statistics. It became clear that sport had a unique power to cut through stigma, build trust, and reach people, even if they weren’t sports fans themselves.
Four years ago, I founded Prime Effect to run job readiness and mental health programs for job seekers across Australia. Seeing the growing need for inclusive, lived-experience-led programs, I’ve since expanded into the NDIS space in collaboration with Rhys. Together, we’re delivering engaging, evidence-based programs that meet people where they’re at—empowering individuals of all abilities to build confidence, capability and connection.
